A football is an air-inflated ball utilized in various sports called football. Goals or points are scored when the ball enters designated areas; teams compete by moving it opposite directions on the field. Originally, balls were made of natural materials like pig bladders within leather casings, leading to the term "pigskin". Today's balls are engineered to specifications with rubber/plastic bladders and often plastic shells. Football variations use different balls but share basic shapes: spheres (association, Gaelic), prolate spheroids (rugby, Aussie rules) or pointed-ends (American, Canadian). The oldest known football, dating back to circa 1550, was discovered in Scotland and consists of deer leather and a pig's bladder. In the US/Canada, "football" refers to leather balls used professionally/collegiately. Leather balls may be tanned for grip in various conditions; historically white footballs were used at night due to visibility, but this is less common now. Professional leagues often use footballs with painted stripes for improved visibility. Different leagues have unique ball designs such as the XFL's black ball or AIFL's red, white and blue panels. The shape of gridiron balls features pointed ends, introduced in 1934 by Hugh Shorty Ray to enhance forward passes.
