Two types of pumps exist: reciprocating and rotary. Reciprocating pumps, like bicycle pumps, use a piston that moves back-and-forth within a cylinder to draw air from outside when extending the handle and push it into the tire upon retracting. Valves prevent air from being ejected back out. Bicycle pumps compress air by reducing its volume and increasing pressure in the tire's closed space.
