Print with the top facing the build plate and you shouldn't have to use supports if you have a good cooling setup (for the pin holes). The shaft is 1 inch in diameter, a home depot dowel should be fine just make sure its light. Make sure to support Russ Mitchell as he is the cool guy who teaches this type of weapon.
