History The Fokker E.III was a monoplane aircraft flown by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey during World War I. It was introduced in December 1915 when the air war in Europe was still very young. Initially it was used for primarily reconnaissance purposes but with its fixed Spandau machine gun it proved to be a great dogfighter and was the first aircraft to arrive in numbers sufficient to allow creation of specialized fighter units. For a time in 1916 it would be the best fighter aircraft flying and would be responsible for the "Fokker Scourge" when these aircraft maintained air superiority over the Allies. Improved aircraft by the Allies would ultimately lead to the Fokker E.III being outmoded. It would be fully replaced by aircraft such as the Albatros D.I and D.II in early 1917.
