History One of Germany's most notable aircraft would be the Fokker Dr. 1 Dreidecker (triplane). This aircraft sees a lot of service in late 1917 to early 1918 and becomes legendary in its role: dogfighting. Despite its fame, only about 320 of these aircraft are built while thousands of other types are produced. Generally, the best pilots end up flying the Fokker Dr.1, with Manfred von Richthofen becoming famous for flying it until his death in April 1918. The Fokker Dr.1 is very maneuverable and can be deadly in the hands of a veteran pilot. Unfortunately, upper wing problems cause a number of crashes early in its service but those problems are fixed for the most part. Still, technology in the late war period is such that in less than half a year, the Fokker Dr.1 is phased out in favor of more advanced aircraft like the Fokker D.VII biplane.
