The Fokker DVII, designed by Reinhold Platz for Germany's Luftwaffe, was considered the best World War I fighter plane. Over 3,300 were produced before the war ended in 1918; it boasted speeds of up to 124 mph and outmaneuvered most allied fighters. Its design emerged from a competition involving top German pilots who tested and recommended the aircraft. Manfred von Richthofen, the 'Red Baron', was initially skeptical but later endorsed it after modifications.
