The Fokker DVII, a renowned World War I fighter plane, was designed by Reinhold Platz for the Luftwaffe. With 3,300 produced in 1918, this sturdy and fast aircraft could outmaneuver most Allied fighters, reaching speeds of 124 mph. It was a direct result of a competition involving top German pilots who recommended it after improvements were made. Manfred Von Richtoven, for example, initially found the V11 dangerous but later endorsed it after modifications. The DVII's durability and ease of control made it difficult to shoot down in combat, impressing the Allies so much that they used it well into the 1930s. Post-war, Germany surrendered the planes to the Allies, who utilized them for air mail delivery during the 1920s.
