The SCAR-L was designed to supplant the M4A1, Mk 18 CQBR, and Mk 12 SPR in SOCOM service before the order for the SCAR-L was unexpectedly canceled by SOCOM. The SCAR-H will instead replace the M14 and Mk 11 sniper rifles currently used by SOCOM operatives. However, the new rifle is not intended to fully replace existing firearms, but rather serve as a supplementary option at the operator's discretion.
