A flywheel, a spinning mechanical apparatus, stores rotational energy. It has high moment of inertia, resisting changes in rotation speed. Energy increases with the square of rotation velocity; adding torque raises it. Conversely, by applying torque to a load, a flywheel discharges stored energy and slows down.
