When an insect or spider crawls across a leaf and touches a single hair, the Venus flytrap's leaves quickly spring into action, preparing to snap shut. However, the trap will only close its leaves if another touch occurs within approximately twenty seconds of the initial contact. If no further contact is made, the leaves relax back into their original position, ready to wait for the next unsuspecting insect or spider.
