Flying Tourbillon Model V (Daniels Double Independant Wheel Remontoir Escapement)
thingiverse
I've been meaning to revisit the Daniels Double Escapement for a while now. Here it is spinning smoothly at 4rpm/14400bph:\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_5mmGTDFHM\r\n\r\nIn my opinion, this watch escapement stands out as the most visually appealing one out there. As I described previously:\r\n\r\n"...This is a model watch escapement based on George Daniels' design, which cleverly incorporates the Swiss lever and detent escapement concepts while aiming to eliminate their weaknesses. Of course, the added mechanical complexity somewhat negates any potential efficiency and accuracy gains. Despite this, I find its symmetrical appearance coupled with its intentionally asymmetrical tick more captivating. The latter quality necessitates a...." \r\n\r\n...remontoir. to decouple the escape wheels from each other as the carriage rotates. The alternative is to have two separate power trains as George Daniels did in his watches, but that's difficult to incorporate into a tourbillon, so I stuck with the remontoirs. This time around because it's hand powered, I eliminated the forks.\r\n\r\nI originally intended to power this design off of a weighted ball chain, but this escapement requires much more power. This is somewhat counterintuitive since it relies on radial thrust rather than sliding action as in the Swiss Lever. The greater mass of the carriage, the inertial of two escape wheels, and the double unlocking action, however, make up for the energy saved. In an actual watch, this may not be the case especially if there are two power trains independently driving each escape wheel. I might adapt the hub piece to incorporate the spring motor I designed for my Dual Ulysse model. \r\n\r\nAssembly notes:\r\n- All shafts are 2mm in diameter.\r\n- Requires one 608 bearing (22x8x7).\r\n- Print two of the spokes part and print two escape wheels (one mirrored).\r\n- The pallets (both impulse and locking) need to be slightly oversized and must be sanded down for a perfect fit.\r\n- The top frame has a distinctive look, reminiscent of some sort of Satanic goat head emblem.\r\n- Add grub screws to the balance wheel to calibrate.
