Frank Lloyd Wright: Peacock Chair / Silla "Pavo Real". Virtual Collection of Furniture under Construction. Icons of Design and Their Creations. A Tribute to the Pieces of Industrial Design History. The Commission for FLW: Preserving an Architectural Heritage ... In 1916, the Japanese government commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a new Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Wright's top priority was that the building be earthquake-resistant. He achieved this by resting the structure on piles of concrete slabs that descended below, essentially "floating" the building on deeper layers of mud. The hotel opened in 1922 and famously survived the devastating earthquake of 1923. The hexagonally shaped back of the chair mirrors the ornament of the cornice and ceiling, deriving from forms found in Japanese art and design."
