Flux Capacitor Charger Wall Mount Adapter
thingiverse
I recently got a ThinkGeek Flux Capacitor USB car charger. Since I already have a USB port in my car, I thought it would be more useful to mount it on the wall above my desk instead. I designed this adapter to replace the existing cigarette lighter plug which comes with the charger, allowing you to power the charger off of a 12V DC wall adapter. FreeCAD source file included, feel free to use and modify it as desired. Post-Printing Assembly Instructions Remove the six screws on the back of the charger. The front and back halves of the charger should pull apart. The on/off button will also be free now. Set the top and the button aside. Desolder the red and black wires in the lower right corner of the board. These wires go to the cigarette lighter plug. Remove the two screws holding the plug onto the charger. Pull the plug off, guiding the wires out as necessary. Thread new wires through the back of the charger and the mount you just printed. Trim to length and strip the ends. Solder the wires down to the charger board. Press the new mount onto the back of the charger. Attach it using the screws that you previously removed from the cigarette lighter plug. Do not overtighten these screws, as this will tend to crack the printed plastic. Solder the barrel jack onto the wires. Typically, you'll want the center pin to be positive. I do not know if this charger has reverse input protection or not. At this point, it might not be a bad idea to plug in your wall adapter and verify that everything is working. You may have to press the on/off button after applying power to get the lights to turn on. Once you're satisfied that it works, use hot-melt glue to secure the barrel jack into the mount. Re-attach the front of the charger. To use the full capacity of the charger, you will need a 12V/2A adapter. If you are only charging small devices, or just want to make it light up, a 12V/1A adapter will probably be fine. Several different styles of DC barrel jack should work. You can get them on eBay by searching for "2.1mm DC Jack". Digikey part CP-024A-ND should also work.
