My trusty Cartesian printer features Z screws that float freely at the top, resulting in some play in the X carriage. The brackets that hold the 24mm linear bearing keep the top of the Z screws firmly in place. I'm aware that linear bearings aren't typically designed for this purpose, but since the Z screws move so slowly, they essentially serve as a guide and bear very little weight.
