Rudbeckia, a genus of annual, biennial, and perennial herbaceous plants belonging to the Astrope family (Asteraceae), encompasses approximately 40 species. Native to North America, many species thrive on prairies; they are also cultivated as ornamentals in Europe and Africa. Notably, Black-eyed Susan boasts dark-colored inflorescence hearts, earning it the English name "Black-eyed Suzanne." Its inflorescence-basket shape led to the German moniker "Sun hat" (Leuchtender Sonnenhut). The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus in honor of Swedish botanists Olof Rudbeck the elder and younger, with the latter being a friend and teacher at Uppsala University.
