Human: Sculptural relief is a technique where elements remain attached to a solid foundation of identical material. The term relief originates from the Latin verb relevo, meaning "to elevate." When creating a sculpture in relief, the sculpted material appears raised above the background plane.[1] What actually occurs when cutting relief from a flat stone or wood surface is lowering the field, leaving unsculpted areas seemingly elevated. This technique requires extensive chiseling away of the background, a time-consuming process. On the other hand, relief spares the formation of the subject's rear and is less prone to breakage than a sculpture in three dimensions, particularly one featuring a standing figure where ankles are a potential weak point, especially in stone. In materials like metal, clay, plaster stucco, ceramics, or papier-mâché, the form can be simply added to or raised from the background, and monumental bronze reliefs are created through casting.
