Flora

Flora, the Roman goddess of Spring, was a subject commissioned from Scottish sculptor John Gibson in 1830 by the Earl of Durham, who ordered two replicas. The present version of this sculpture is owned by Richard Alison of Liverpool, who also possessed another notable work by Gibson, "Cupid in Disguise". A possible inspiration for Flora's design can be found in Bertel Thorvaldsen's statue of "Faith" from 1818, which served as a prototype. Characterized by its simplicity and restraint, this sculpture is one of John Gibson's most austere creations, with some art historians suggesting that it may have been influenced by ancient Greek figures due to its clean lines, modest drapery, and straightforward pose.
