Flora

In Greek mythology, Flore is married to Zephyus, the god who rules over the western wind. She reminisces about her time in the wilderness and is often portrayed as a stunning young woman with loose hair adorned with flowers. As she reaches for a garland of flowers gathered in her dress, she gestures with her hand as if to scatter them across the ground around her. Flore is frequently depicted as a symbol of spring or the harvest season. This female sculpture from the 18th century is crafted from patinated terracotta and was once owned by Jean Hennessy. It represents the style of that time, but unfortunately, the sculptor who created this piece remains unknown. The Museum of Art and History of Cognac received this donation in the mid-20th century courtesy of Kilian Hennessy. Jean Hennessy (1874-1944) was a French diplomat and politician from a large family of merchants who sold Cognac. As a result, he collected many works from the 18th and 19th centuries, including this sculpture. The scan provided by Alienor.org comes courtesy of Conseil des Musées.
