Flint is a hard, sedimentary rock that forms from tiny quartz crystals. For thousands of years, people have used flint to make sharp tools and spark fires. It typically shows up as small nodules or chunks in rocks like chalk and limestone. Inside the nodule, flint usually has a dark grey, black, green, white, or brown color, and often looks glassy or waxy. A thin layer on the outside of the nodules is usually lighter in color and rough to the touch. Many people find these nodules along streams and beaches. Flint breaks into sharp pieces easily, making it perfect for knife blades and other cutting tools. People have been using flint to make stone tools for millions of years, and its incredible durability has allowed them to date its use accurately over that time. Flint is one of the main materials used to define the Stone Age.
