The limestone sculpture tells the story of Icarus, a young Greek who was locked up in the palace of Knossos on Crete with his father Daedalus. Determined to break free, they crafted wings from feathers and wax, hoping to soar into the sky. However, Icarus disregarded his father's warning and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax to melt and sending him plummeting to a tragic death in the sea. The artists behind this piece commented: "Icaro is a subject that has captivated me time and again, with its rich history always leaving an indelible mark on my mind. I ponder: the stark contrast between Icarus's majestic flight towards the sun, his unbridled momentum towards the sky, and his eventual downfall, serves as a poignant reminder of the human desire for freedom and self-determination."
