Flexible Spider Shaft Coupler with Hot Glue Spider
thingiverse
While I appreciate the original Printrbot Z axis shaft coupler's innovative design, in practice it doesn't work for me. My own prints were ruined by periodic slipping on the shaft. The finished product works well enough to use on my Printrbot, but a vital point needs mention - there is no vertical support when these are used, so you have to hold the printer's z axis firmly in place at all times to avoid damaging your equipment. I suggest making sure your prints remain undisturbed during the process. This design is quite accommodating of misalignment and won't slip, but it does result in a taller shaft than the original Printrbot Z coupler. For those looking for a secure alternative, purchasing some aluminum bellows or flexible couplings would be advisable as these lock everything in place without the risk of accidental lifting. If you're willing to spend $20 on such materials, I'd recommend taking that route rather than building this design from scratch. Instructions and further details can be found at the provided links: http://amzn.to/28Ozw0z I took inspiration for these designs from existing ideas, although all files presented are new and different from those original sources. The included models have been sized specifically for use with a #6 nut and bolt on a 5mm motor shaft, as well as a 5/16 nylock nut on the driven shaft. For optimal results, I recommend printing these components at 50% so they can be easily removed without damaging the mold - this allows the reuse of these critical parts.
