Flexible Respirator Mask Tyvek with 3D printed Assembly

December 2020: A work-in-progress design is being actively refined, with a newer version soon to be lab tested. Numerous questionable open source respirator designs are readily available online, but I refrain from contributing until my own design can guarantee 95% effectiveness. Visit http://basicrespirator.com for the latest updates and project information. DISCLAIMER: This design lacks NIOSH certification and FDA approval, failing to meet their criteria for an N95 respirator. Users must exercise caution when wearing this mask in public, adhering to guidelines recommended by the CDC and public health departments. I do not claim that this mask provides absolute protection against COVID-19. The Basic Respirator is a custom-fit, partially disposable respirator designed for emergency use. A flat sheet of Tyvek™ is folded into a lightweight, rigid structure that conforms to the face. A 3D printed filter assembly inserts into a hole in the mask and accepts an N95 or similar filter. A neoprene gasket ensures a secure fit and eliminates gaps. The filter assembly prints quickly, without supports or cleanup required, and the mask assembles rapidly with double-sided adhesive, no sewing necessary. Other 3D printed respirators have filled a need promptly but suffer from poor fit and gaping issues, allowing viruses to seep in, requiring extensive printing times, and using excessive material. FDM prints, in particular, feature microscopic holes that are difficult to sterilize and clean for hospital use. This mask was designed to address these problems and facilitate mass production.
