I do not claim that this mask is guaranteed to keep you protected from COVID-19. The Basic Respirator is an open source, partially disposable, custom fit respirator designed for emergency use. The mask is folded from a flat sheet of Tyvek™ into a lightweight, rigid structure that still conforms to the face. A 3D printed filter assembly inserts into a hole in the mask and accepts an N95 or similar filter. A neoprene gasket helps the mask conform to the face and eliminate gaps. The filter assembly prints in about an hour, doesn't require supports or cleanup and the mask can be assembled in minutes with double-sided adhesive, no sewing required. Other 3D printed respirators have helped to meet a need quickly, but they have many problems with the fit and gaping, which allow the virus to seep in, require a long time to print, use a large volume of material. FDM prints in particular have microscopic holes and are difficult to sterilize and clean for hospital use. This mask was designed to address these problems and be made in larger quantities.
