Flexible couplings are utilized when shafts are slightly misaligned or need slight relative angular motion; they transmit motion between shafts by means of pins fastened tightly to one flange and loosely fitted into holes in the other, with compressible materials like rubber or leather surrounding the pins for shock absorption during power transfer. These couplings act as direct coupling devices to reduce starting shocks.
