Originating from the United States during World War II, the Fletcher class destroyer was designed in 1939 as an improvement over previous classes (Porter and Somers). These ships went on to serve in the Korean War and Vietnam War, named after Admiral Frank F. Fletcher, this class was the largest of its kind ordered and highly successful among destroyer crews.
