They get by consuming blood or hematophagy from their hosts, feeding on the very life force of the animals they latch onto. Adult fleas measure around 3 mm long, about .12 in, with brown coloring and bodies flattened sideways, allowing them to easily slip through fur or feathers without any issues. Wings are nonexistent but powerful claws prevent being dislodged; mouthparts modified for piercing skin and sucking blood; hind legs optimized for impressive jumps. Fleas can jump up to 50 times their own body length, an incredible feat rivaling only another group of insects known as the superfamily of froghoppers. Worm-like larvae without limbs consume leftover debris on the host's skin using their chewing mouthparts.
