The Liao Dynasty, also known as the Khitan Empire and the Liao Empire, was a powerful empire in East Asia that ruled over Mongolia and large portions of northern China proper, southern Siberia, and parts of Korea from 907 to 1125. The Liao dynasty was founded by Abaoji, Khagan of the Khitan people, around the time of the collapse of Tang China's western successor state, the Later Liang Dynasty. It was the first state to control all of Manchuria. The Liao dynasty began a process of rapid territorial expansion immediately after its founding, with Abaoji leading successful conquests of Balhae and other neighboring states. Later emperors would gain control over the Sixteen Prefectures by fueling proxy wars that led to the collapse of the Later Tang Dynasty in 936 AD. The Liao dynasty established tributary relationships with Goryeo, a medieval Korean kingdom, and Song China after failing to conquer Goryeo. The influence of the Liao dynasty on subsequent culture includes a large legacy of statuary art works, with important surviving examples in painted wood, metal, and three-color glazed sancai ceramics. The music and songs of the Liao dynasty are also known to have indirectly influenced Mongol, Jurchen, and Chinese musical traditions. The empire's rich cultural heritage has been preserved through numerous artifacts, including intricate carvings, delicate pottery, and majestic sculptures.
