Flash Drive Case Design Project

Flash Drive Case Design Project

thingiverse

In this innovative project, students will receive a flash drive and challenged to create an original protective case for it. Every design should incorporate a distinct mechanism or component that showcases the student's creativity. The final product must be designed in such a way that the flash drive remains accessible through USB ports. Three examples are provided to serve as inspiration: a retractable model, a swing-out cover design, and a corkscrew cap system. Each student is encouraged to use a unique mechanism not previously used by their peers, or collaborate with classmates to create a single case for multiple flash drives. How I Created This Project Retractable Case Design In this tutorial, I will guide you through the process of designing a retractable flash drive case. Step 1: Design and Hollow Out a Shell First, design a shell that is large enough to contain the flash drive. Make sure it has sufficient clearance for the slide mechanism. Step 2: Cut a Hole for the Flash Drive Next, cut a hole through the shell that allows the flash drive to slide in and out with minimal friction. The opening should be just large enough to accommodate the drive without allowing it to fall through unintentionally. Step 3: Design the Slider Mechanism Design the piece that holds the flash drive inside the shell and serves as the extension mechanism. This component must have sufficient clearance for smooth movement within the shell. Add a collar on one side of the slider to securely hold the flash drive in place. Step 4: Create the Cap Component For the final design step, create a cap that houses the slider mechanism. The outer part should be the same size as the shell, while the inner portion should protrude beyond the shell's interior. Step 5: Print Out Each Piece Print out one of each component to ensure precise dimensions and smooth assembly. Step 6: Assemble the Retractable Case Insert the flash drive into the collar on the slider, securing it with a small amount of super adhesive for added stability. Step 7: Insert the Slider Mechanism Carefully insert the slider mechanism into the shell, ensuring the flash drive lines up properly. You may need to sand down the sides of the slider to facilitate smooth movement. Step 8: Attach the Cap Finally, attach the cap to the end of the shell containing the slider mechanism, preventing it from coming loose over time. Project: Design a Flash Drive Case Objectives: Each student should create an original case that protects a flash drive while incorporating a unique mechanism or component. Through this project, students will learn about designing interconnected pieces using 3D CAD programs. Audiences: This project is ideal for intermediate-level students familiar with 3D CAD software. Preparation: * Each student will need access to a flash drive with its commercial case removed. * Students will require a program for designing their project and a printer to produce the prototype. * A suitable super adhesive will come in handy during assembly. Steps: Brainstorm innovative ideas for a unique case Obtain necessary measurements and design on a 3D CAD program Print out the prototype and take notes on areas for improvement Revised the design as needed and print out the final version Assemble the final case and ensure it functions properly
