Flamethrowers have been used since World War I by German and Austrian forces. The first models were portable, hand-operated flamethrows that weighed 10 kilograms. By World War II, improvements had made flamethrows more accessible, reliable and potent than their early predecessors, enabling ground soldiers to move through trench networks quickly. Flamethrower infantry became common on the battlefields of North Africa, France and Belgium as both Allies and Axis forces utilized these tools. The US Marines employed flame throwers against heavily entrenched Japanese positions during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
