Flame of Possibility - 3DPIA 2019 Trophy
myminifactory
The 3D printing world embodies innovation, creativity, and passion, and the 3D Printing Industry Awards demands a trophy that celebrates those qualities: the Flame of Possibility. A core of tapered pentagonal forms drawn through with intricate details are arrayed into a dodecahedron and fused together seamlessly. A sleek slab curves from below and sweeps above, bearing the awards inscription prominently, while providing ample space for additional content. Underneath sits a faceted, wireframe Mobius-style torus, cradling the trophy body securely. Technical notes: * The trophy body is specifically designed for SLA manufacture, featuring internal features that will be revealed in translucent materials. * The trophy base is intended for MJF fabrication, with a 0.5mm tolerance to fit the body perfectly. * The body is engineered for translucent or transparent materials in SLA, showcasing the internal channels. A glossy or reflective outer surface will also highlight external features effectively. * As the base is manufactured using MJF, it is expected to be nylon, in grey or black, and opaque by design. * With a maximum bounding box dimension of 105mm, the trophy fits within the specified size constraints precisely. Design notes: * Visually, the core of the trophy resembles the shape of a flame, yet integrates that shape with precise geometric constructions expertly. * It was essential that the design showcase detail on both micro and macro levels, providing a broad, cohesive shape from one perspective while revealing an intricate set of features when viewed closely. * Given the numerous material possibilities for the trophy body, the design was developed to dazzle whether the material is opaque or transparent, shiny, reflective, or matte. Different materials will simply add unique character to the form. * Originally, the base of the trophy had a more organic shape, but has been simplified to a faceted form. The rectangular holes at small scale provide an odd and interesting contrast to the curved, twisting torus at larger scale. So, Protolabs, can you bring this design to life?
