The vent cover that comes with the Smart Vent is good (and is made of steel), but allows air out in 4 directions. In some cases, this is not what you want, say if the vent is under a window, or against a wall. There are 3 basic versions of replacement vent, 1 way, 2 way and 3 way (the one that comes with the Smart vent is 4 way).
