Fixture for bending the copper wire for a 5.8GHz antenna
thingiverse
This is a custom-designed tool for shaping copper wire into the unique curves required by circularly polarized cloverleaf or skew-planar antennas, specifically for use in 5.8GHz FPV backpacks as showcased on RC Model Reviews' YouTube channel. Thank you to RC Model Reviews for sharing valuable insights. I'd also like to acknowledge punkkills and his inspirations for getting the Micro 105 FPV Quadcopter featured on Thingiverse, which sparked my fascination with micro quads. The dimensions of this fixture are based on the information provided in RC Model Reviews' video. It's specifically designed for use with 18ga thermostat wire that has had its insulation removed, resulting in a diameter of approximately .97mm, close to the required 1mm. This tool allows you to bend the wire to your desired length after it's been shaped into the correct curve. You may be able to use it with .8mm welding wire used by motorpixelgimbals on his fixture, but I haven't tested it and note that stiffer wire might present a problem. I also appreciate motor's design for bending the radius of the loop, which could potentially be added in future iterations. To use this fixture, you'll need 2 needle-nose pliers and a wire cutter, as well as some 18ga copper wire and the tool itself. I've stripped out 18ga thermostat wire and plan to post a video demonstrating its use. To shape the wire using this fixture, start with a straight piece of wire at least 65mm long. Place it in the top of the fixture, fully embedded in the end stop, and hold it in place with one plier while bending the wire around the pivot post with another plier. Begin by twisting the pliers to initiate the bend, then squeeze the wire gently to achieve a tight corner. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as this could cause the pivot post to break off. Repeat this process for the two other corners, making sure to lift the wire carefully over each retaining post to maintain straight legs. Once the wire is bent, cut off any remaining wire flush with the edge of the fixture. Print Settings: Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: Mini Rafts: No Supports: No
