Fixed Harpoon, Hot Springs Village, Port Moller, Alaska CAT# 2-21.1.6 Likely Hot Springs 1A 2000-1600 CE Japanese Excavations in 1960 Led to Major Discoveries Detailed descriptions of the excavations can be found in Workman (1966) Arctic Anthropology, 3(2):132-153, and Maschner (2004) AJA 2(1-2):100-116. The Hot Springs site is a massive village situated on the shore of Port Moller, facing the southern Bering Sea on the Alaska Peninsula. Multiple excavation teams have worked at this site over the past century. Main occupations at the Hot Springs site date back to 2000 BCE and continue until 100 CE, with another occupation spanning from 100 CE to 800 CE. The artifacts collected from the Hot Springs site were a direct result of research conducted under NSF grants 0137756, 1204020, 1139266, 1321411. H. Maschner served as Principal Investigator for this project. The original digitization work took place at Idaho State University's IVL, with subsequent processing completed at Global Digital Heritage.
