Five Speed Sequential Gearbox
grabcad
The sequential gearbox design represents the continuation of the university project which was aimed at designing a five-speed gearing ratio optimised for a Renault Meganne Trophy race car.The task at hand was to calculate and test the optimum combination between five speed ratios selected from an available range of 25, with a final drive obtained via the differential with the choice of any product available to purchase. The vehicle develops an estimated 450 hp from a 3.5 litre V6 ICE, which had to be driven on the Dutch circuit Zandvoort in the racing simulator. Once these have been calculated and tested on the driving simulator, the final setup numbers have been converted to a simple gearbox layout, from which the exact number of teeth for each gear has been established to replicate the ratios designed for the race car. Using a gear measurements calculator, the geometrical features of the teeth have been calculated to allow for appropriate meshing between gears. Learning outcomes are represented by a thorough improvement process in using the Part Design and the DMU Kinematics modules available through CATIA V5, and an in-depth understanding of how to design a sequential gearbox for a race car.
