I created a character called Fred on Fitocracy's site in no time to try out the MakerBot 3D printer at a nearby workshop. The example photo shows the printed piece in low resolution. Instructions The Fitocracy Fred mascot was made using a free 3D program called Blender that I've been using for several years. To my surprise, it allows output to an .stl file. I kept things simple by starting with a front and side photo of the character. Then, I modeled it using those photos as guides. The model is made up of geometric shapes with rounded corners - just a cube in shape with slight curves. INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PRINT When importing pieces into the MakerBot app, be sure to change the scale. I set mine to 600% and saw an immediate improvement. Turn the body and head upside down before printing for better results. The ears proved challenging as they're extremely small. An Xacto knife came in handy when cutting away excess plastic from those tiny details. A slight mark on the head points to where part of the ear needs to be removed so it can be attached afterwards. Assemble by sticking the pieces together using a glue gun or strong glue.
