Fishie cookie cutter
thingiverse
My kid J drew a fishie, and we photographed it, traced it in Inkscape, extruded it, and made a cookie cutter STL file using free software. I printed it at Auckland City Library in about 30 minutes, following some attached instructions that had cookies to follow afterwards. Edit: I added v2, with improvements for a better cutter & truer likeness of the original drawing. I improved eyes and mouth! These will indent your fishie with a lovable fishie expression, if you've got dough over 2mm thick. The cutter is now 9mm high (thicker dough allowed) and thinner (sharper). I lined up the base & cutter better than before. Requirements for Instructions - Pen - Paper - Scanner or digital camera - A computer. - Access to a 3D printer. I'm going to use one at Auckland City Library - Steps to create similar design Go to the internet, install 'inkscape', 'OpenSCAD' and the 'Inscape to OpenSCAD converter'. These tools are all open source and cross-platform (Linux/Mac/Win). Draw a simple but awesome drawing using your creative being. This is the most important part. Photograph the drawing or scan it with your digital camera if you have one. Still in Inkscape, copy & paste 4 versions of that tracing. - i. Cutter inner line, scaled down to 98%, tweaked inside the original line. - ii. A 'cutter outer line', scaled up to 102% then tweaked outside the original line. - iii. A 'base inner line' scaled down to 90%, tweaked inside above - iv. Base outer line, scaled up to 110% and tweaked outide above Export each of these lines to SCAD from Inkscape (Menu Extensions > Generate from Path > Paths to OpenSCAD) Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD See how it creates a fishy preview For each of your 4 generated files: - i. open the file with text editor - ii. Find 'polygon', copy and paste it to clipboard - iii. Now, replace the polygon line matching that in your name and your contents clipboard in OpenSCAD Save file and then press F5 (Design > Compile) See your cutter take shape Modify height for base & cutter Hit 'F6' and then export to STL from menu Design > Export as STL ... Print STL file. I used 'Repetier Host' software with Repetier Server in Linux on Auckland Library - no complicated options available - think it was just a basic extrusion process (we printed without it so I have yet to see its result).
