For the month of October i am Artist in Residence at the Innovation Lab, a makerspace located in the Harold Washington Library, Chicago. The HWL is the main public library in Chicago and the Innovation Lab is a popular addition to their programing and facilities. http://cplmakerlab.wordpress.com/page/2/ During the residency I am going to work on my second 3D printed book. For this project I am working with City of Chicago cultural historian Tim Samuelson. Together we are creating 3D scans of early ornaments by celebrated architect Louis Sullivan http://tomburtonwood.com/2013/10/scanning-sullivan-at-the-sullivan-center/#.UlHthWQkHDI An addition to working on the Sullivan scans during the residency i will be leading a series of four work shops teaching people how to use 123D Catch, Meshmixer and Netfabb to produce 3D printable scans from textures, objects and sculptures using digital cameras and this free software. Yesterday we did a demo on using catch, next week we'll do a "walking tour" of the South Loop to scan some of the architectural detailing and ornament in the immediate vicinity of the library. I used my phone to capture these images of ornament on the Fisher Building located at Dearborn and Van Buren. A bit blurry but not bad for a handful of images shot on a Galaxy S3.
