The River Perch, also known as the Common Perch, belongs to the Perca genus and the Percidae family of freshwater fish within the larger Perciformes group. Widely spread throughout Europe's freshwater bodies and northern Asia up to the Kolyma basin in the east and into Afghanistan's and Iran's reservoirs in the south, this fish has been successfully introduced to Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. It was once thought that River Perch inhabited North America's water bodies but now it is believed those areas are home to a distinct Yellow Perch species, specifically Perca flavescens.
