The Great Buddha of Kamakura stands tall at Kotokuin Temple grounds, its bronze form gazing out over the landscape. At an impressive 13.35 meters high, this statue is the second tallest bronze Buddha in Japan, eclipsed only by a similar marvel in Nara's Todaiji Temple. Originally cast in 1252 and situated within a grand temple hall, the Great Buddha has withstood the test of time. Repeated destruction at the hands of typhoons and a devastating tidal wave in the 14th and 15th centuries forced it to be relocated outside, where it has stood since 1495.
