The sculpture captures a heart-wrenching scene based on a calamitous event that took place in March 1887 at La Boule mine in Borinage's central region. A devastating gas explosion claimed the lives of more than one hundred miners. Meunier rushed to the site, creating numerous sketches and drawings as he absorbed the tragedy firsthand. The poignant image of a mother identifying her deceased son evokes parallels with Michelangelo's Pietà and contemporary news photographs. Meunier conveys the anguish through the woman's anguished posture rather than her facial features, juxtaposing her hunched figure with the stiff, elongated corpse.
