Fire Shot Fishing Lure - Similar to a Hot Shot

Introducing the Fire Shot™ lure. It is similar to the Hot Shot® lure except the geometry is better suited to 3D printing. Specifically, the nose of the lure has a flat bottom that prints directly on the bed of the printer. To compensate for the lack of a protruding “belly” beyond the flat bottom of the nose, the hook end of the lure is bigger in that direction. It is important that the hook end is large enough and hollow so that the hook floats above the line when stationary. This gives the lure its characteristic action when trolled.

Print instructions

Introducing the Fire Shot™ lure. It is important that the hook end is large enough and hollow so that the hook floats above the line when stationary. This gives the lure its characteristic action when trolled. The first two pictures show a comparison between the Fire Shot (white) and Hot Shot.

The two STL files provided are size 70 (approx. 1.5” overall length) and size 50 (approx. 2.0” overall length). The pictures all show size 70. The action on the Fire Shot™ lure appears to be identical to the Hot Shot® lure. Both sizes are designed to use 10x4mm screw eyes (see below). For larger Fire Shot™ sizes you will likely want to use a heavier screw eye so scaling the size 50 STL file to a size 30 should work fine but I have not tested this.

See the attached pictures for some specific PrusaSlicer settings that are required. The lure must be hollow so print the size 70 with zero infill, supports on build plate only, vertical shell perimeters=3, horizontal shell solid layers=3 (top & bottom). For size 50, use the same settings except the vertical and horizontal shells can be increased to 4 layers. To make a “rattle” type Fire Shot™, just pause the print at the appropriate time and drop in a small bead as shown in the pictures.

The hooks, duolock swivels and split rings are easy to find at any sporting goods store but I had to go online to find the screw eyes. I found and have ordered the following screw eyes on Amazon:

Craftdady 200pcs Stainless Steel Screw Eye Pin Bail Pegs Sturdy Metal Tiny Lag Spike Charms for DIY Jewelry Making Findings, 10x4mm.

These look like the right size but I will confirm once I receive them. If someone has another source for the exact size used on size 70 Hot Shots please let me know.

UPDATE: I've uploaded a picture of the Craftdady screw eye compared to the Hot Shot screw eye. The Craftdady screw eyes are slightly smaller than Hot Shot screw eyes. The main difference is the wire diameter used to make the screw eye, Hot Shots measure 1.3mm in diameter and the Craftdady screw eye measures 1.0mm in diameter. The slightly smaller screw eye works fine (maybe even preferable) for the size 70 Fire Shot but might be a little small for a size 50. I also caught my first two trout trolling a size 70 Fire Shot, so they do work!

I am no artist but took a crack at painting a few favorite patterns using nail polish. This is method is more effective for solid colors where you can top coat with a glitter nail polish. Would be great to see some of your creations, especially you air brush artists out there. Finally, let me know if you catch any fish and how this lure stands up in use. Good luck!

Update: Check out the acrylic paint job my cousin's wife did for me. These are coated with clear nail polish to protect the paint. Almost too nice to use!

Ed
