This firebrick originated from HMS Velox, which met its demise in 1915 after colliding with a German contact mine near the Isle of Wight. HMS Velox was initially christened Python by her creators, Hawthorn Leslie and Company. However, following two similar ships' tragic losses, HMS Viper and HMS Cobra, the Navy decided against utilizing snake names for warships again and commissioned Python as Velox (Latin for "swift"). The brick formed part of the coal-burning furnace that heated water for the Parsons Marine steam turbines, a relatively new yet pivotal technological breakthrough at the time of Velox's launch in 1902.
