The Uralic-speaking populations or Finno-Ugrian people inhabit Northeast Europe, North Asia and the Carpathian Basin regions where languages like Finnish, Hungarian, Estonian, and Sami are spoken. These groups often find themselves surrounded by communities speaking different language families such as Indo-European. Originally, the term Finno-Ugric was used to describe a linguistic group rather than an ethnic one; however, Finno-Ugrian speakers share a common cultural heritage that fosters a sense of unity among them, especially among Baltic Finns who consider themselves part of this larger community.
