The Swedish-style ylioppilaslakki tradition among Finnish students has several similarities to its northern counterpart. Characteristically, the gold-plated cockade on top of the cap features an iconic image - the lyre of Apollo. This design is used as the University of Helsinki's insignia. The present design was first introduced in the late 1800s and remained consistent for nearly a century, worn consistently by Finnish students from early spring to autumn until 1959. In current times, caps are mainly worn on public holidays like Labor Day in May, special academic occasions, or high school graduation events. Every Finnish student graduates wear a ylioppilaslakki at one point during their education cycle as part of tradition.
