Finnish doctor's hat
thingiverse
My friend has a PhD dissertation to defend and he asked for a small surprise gift that would make him stand out. So I designed him a custom doctor's hat that imitates the traditional Finnish doctor's hat in size and shape. To ensure accuracy, I measured from an authentic doctor's hat and incorporated those measurements into my design. Each department has its own unique emblem, so I created multiple versions of the hat with and without the emblem. The provided emblem is my interpretation of the local university's actual emblem, but it may not be 100% accurate. In addition, my personally printed version features a logo of the research group stamped on the bottom of the hat (the logo file is not included, and the provided files do not have the stamp). Print Settings: Printer: Kossel XL Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.15mm Infill: 15% Notes: I printed this model at a scale of 0.4, which took around 32 meters of filament. Even the emblem printed nicely without supports. My setup for printing: Delta printer with linear rails and Repetier firmware PLA 1.75mm (eSUN) Nozzle 0.4mm Brim 5mm Perimeters 2 Solid layers top/bottom 4/3 Post-Printing: After printing, I base painted the hat with a coat of base spray paint and glossy black. Then, I used typical miniature wargaming paints to add golden accents to the emblem, a matte finish to the belt under the emblem, and some quick shading. How I Designed This: My protocol for creating the hat in Blender involved the following steps: 1) I set the body of the hat as rigid. 2) I dropped a silk cloth on top of the body. 3) I pulled the rigid belt on top of the body and silk cloth. 4) I turned the silk cloth into a rigid material and cut off any excess fabric. 5) I "glued" the body, silk cloth, brim, second belt layer, and emblem together using a boolean union operation.
