Printing two separate parts seems like a redundant process. Apparently, some people believe that combining them results in a stronger overall structure, but this claim may be exaggerated. A printer with poor layer adhesion would indeed make it a problem. I printed mine using three shells and 30% infill, and it's incredibly resilient - even when pulling on the loop with all my strength, I couldn't break it.
