Eskrima, arnis, and kali are Filipino weapon-based martial arts with various names in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Arnis comes from Old Spanish 'arnes,' meaning armor, while eskrima is a Filipinization of the Spanish word for fencing, 'esgrima.' The term 'kali' is mostly used outside the Philippines but accepted as a synonym in the country. Numerous theories explain kali's origin, including it being derived from Cebuano words or similar martial art terms. Practitioners of these arts are called eskrimador, arnisador, or kalista/mangangali depending on the name used for their art.
