Filament Spool Tool Caddy
thingiverse
I needed a way to better organize my metric nut drivers, which I'd purchased at a flea market. I considered printing a dedicated rack but didn't want to waste half a spool of filament on the project! What you see here is how I repurposed an empty 3D filament spool into a tool caddy by simply printing a few clips to "elevate" the spool off my workbench. This allows longer tools (like nut drivers) to be fully suspended and not drag across the bench. This approach uses minimal filament and doesn't take much time to print, working well for me. Just print 3 to 5 pieces and clip them around the perimeter of an empty spool. I found that an old medicine bottle fit nicely in the center of the spool, serving as a catch-all for pens, pencils, and smaller tools. Two versions of the clip are included. The basic part (shown in the photo) lifts the spool off my workbench surface by 19mm. The "TallBoy" variant lifts the spool by 32mm and is useful if I have longer tools to deal with.
