Filament spool holder with reverse bowden
prusaprinters

Makes use of a voron style spool holder (Which are super awesome) and attaches to 2020 extrusion. Has an integrated opening for a reverse bowden tube that sits close to the spool, so no overt unwinding.

It works really well. The spool position is great and it is incredibly firmly mounted to the machine, zero wobbling.

I previously had a bearing-based spool holder on my Ender 3 and it would over dispense filament and meant all of my spools ended up really loose, this does not happen now, the Voron-style PTFE spool design is basically perfect in my book (I might be biased).

Hardware needed/BOM

You'll need 2t-nuts and 2 M5x12 bolts, as well as some spare PTFE tube for the top of the spool holder.

Please note

The current version has not been printed yet, so feedback is very welcome. On mine, the tolerances were really tight between the spool holder and the mount and required sanding. It has been widened by 0.6mm and some fillets have been added to make inserting it a little easier, but let me know if it's too loose now. I might do a redesign. It also has a hole for a threaded M2 screw at the back if you have issues keeping the spool holder part in place, but again unknown right now if that is needed.

The version in the photos is a slightly older print, it's been refined since then and sits lower so it will not interfere with the spool and various other changes listed below.

Thanks

This design is based on the spool mount from the boubounokefalos Ender Switchwire mod https://github.com/boubounokefalos/Ender_SW

Differences between this and the switchwire version are:

Arm rotated 90 degrees

Better access to mounting points

Integrated reverse bowden tube hole

Looser mounting mechanism with additional chamfers

Changed angle of spool to sit slightly behind printer

Added m2 retention screw hole

How to print

The version pictured was made with esun PLA+ at 0.3mm, 3 walls, 3 top, 3 bottom and 25% infill. It's incredibly sturdy, but you might need to up some stuff if printing in vanilla PLA, or just do the best thing and use PLA+ or PETG. Seriously, PLA + is so much better than standard PLA.
