This is a Filament Sensor for our Printer. I use double-sided adhesive tape to secure it firmly in place :) It uses an off-brand optical endstop switch and simply guides the filament through it. The endstop is connected to a Raspberry Pi running Octoprint, which takes care of parking and resuming by utilizing the Filament Sensor Plugin http://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/filament_sensor or the Filament Sensor Reloaded (I use this one)http://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/filament_sensor_reloaded. Connect the Voltage Cable to a 3V Pin from Raspberry. The ground is connected to a GND Pin. The Signal goes into a free GPIO Pin. You can see my connection on a picture and the setup for the plugin. Works with all 1.75 mm filament (you should be able to drill it up to work with 3mm), except transparent ones. Print Settings Printer: Anet A8 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.1 or 0.2 Infill: 30% Notes: I print it with 0,1 without problems. You can also print 0,2.
