23-10-2019 BREAKING NEWS!!!! I've just uploaded a cutting-edge microprocessor-based design, programmed using an Arduino Uno. This innovative creation boasts enhanced functionality and streamlined usability. Check out www.thingiverse.com/thing:3926841 for the full scoop....BREAKING NEWS!!!! (UPDATE 21-7-19) The circuit requires adjustments for 3D printers that utilize 256x microstepping technology. I've uploaded revised instructions, including a crucial resistor value modification. (UPDATE 21-7-19) I've refined the box design to allow the idler arm to retract further from the filament, accommodating larger rubber o-rings if desired. Additionally, I've eliminated a section of the right axle support to improve photodiode and phototransistor board placement. This modification prevents false jam detection caused by disc-photodiode contact. I've also optimized the filament inlet dimensions to snugly fit 4mm PTFE tubes. This revolutionary filament sensor detects either filament runout or filament jams using an optoelectronic sensor that tracks a slotted wheel's rotation, triggered by filament movement. The sensor compares this data with extruder step signals from the 3D printer mainboard. The detection and comparison process relies on electronics without a microprocessor. This ensures seamless performance at various print speeds. When detected filament movement falls short of expected movement, the sensor sends a pause signal to the printer mainboard, halting the print. This intelligent sensor detects most types of underextrusion or filament jams and runouts, pausing the print for problem resolution. In many cases, the print can be resumed.
